Psilocybin Mushrooms

You probably have already tried psychedelic mushrooms; maybe you have also tried magic mushroom tea or even edibles, like chocolates or gummies, but have you ever tried to cook magic mushrooms?

You might even be wondering, Can you cook magic mushrooms? Well, the answer is yes! You can easily add psilocybin powder to any sauce, stew, or baked goods, and you can even add shrooms to any of your favourite mushroom recipes.

Read on to get a delicious recipe for shrooms, as well as recommendations for dosing and an idea of what effects to expect from a psilocybin trip.

First, What Do Psilocybin Mushrooms Taste Like?

Most descriptions of the taste of magic mushrooms include words such as earthy, woodsy, and musty. Some say they perceive a bitter taste; others even perceive a sweet taste, and others still don’t perceive any taste at all.

However, whichever the taste may be, people don’t consume magic mushrooms to satisfy their palate; people consume psilocybin for its effects.

What Are the Effects of Psilocybin?

When you consume magic mushrooms, your own body actually converts the psilocybin to the psychoactive component psilocin. The metabolisation of psilocybin can take from a few minutes to an hour depending on how the magic mushrooms are consumed. Once psilocin is coursing through your body, it will bind with serotonin receptors in your brain and will suppress sensory filters, allowing a flood of information to reach your consciousness. At this point, you might begin to see colours you had never seen before in your life; you might perceive geometric shapes materializing around you; you might even feel like you can hear colours or taste sounds.

This increased perception isn’t limited to the senses. You might become aware of aspects of yourself that you had never considered before, and you might see yourself in a new light. Participants in a ground-breaking study, evaluating the effectiveness of psilocybin to treat depression, reported feeling “recalibrated, reset like they haven’t for years” and “enjoying life”.

How Much Psilocybin Should I Consume to Experience Those Effects?

You can dose psilocybin differently depending on the desired effect. In fact, a practice called microdosing has become popular recently through which microdosers consume a tiny amount of psilocybin to obtain a lot of its benefits without the psychedelic effect. On the other hand, many people want to experience the psychedelic effects of shrooms and, therefore, take a high dose. Here is a guide to psilocybin dosage:

  • Microdose: < 4 mg
  • Low dose: 4 – 8 mg
  • Average dose: 6 – 20 mg
  • High dose: 20 – 35 mg
  • Very high dose: > 35 mg

It is important to note that if you are consuming whole dried magic mushrooms, the total weight of the shroom does not equal its psilocybin content since psilocybin is only a chemical compound found in the mushroom. Therefore, if you plan on consuming shrooms whole, you should refer to this guide to select your magic mushroom dose:

  • Microdose: < 0.25 gr
  • Low dose: 0.25 -1 gr
  • Average dose: 1 – 2.5 gr
  • High dose: 2.5 – 5 gr
  • Very high dose: > 5 gr

The amount of psilocybin in magic mushrooms also can vary significantly depending on the variety of the shroom. Common varieties, such as Psilocybe cubensis and Psilocybe semilanceata aka Liberty Caps, contain around 6 -10 mg of psilocybin per gram of dried mushrooms. These are the varieties of mushrooms that you can consume using the previous guide. However, other varieties, such as Psilocybe azurenscens and Psilocybe bohemica, contain higher concentrations of psilocybin, around 1.78% and 1.74%, respectively; therefore, a smaller amount of these mushrooms will produce the same effect as a larger dose of Liberty Caps, for example; for this reason, dosage should be modified when taking stronger shrooms.

Now Let’s Eat Some Shrooms!

The following recipe was not only created by foodies but also a scientist. Dr. K. Mandrake, who has a doctorate in mycology, and Virginia Haze, a writer and editor, teamed up to write the Psilocybin Chef Cookbook. This ‘Shroomwich’ is one of their psilocybin edibles recipes:
